Due to the current health situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the 18th session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) will be virtually held from 13 to 16 September 2021. The AMCEN bureau agreed that the Conference will take a two-step approach. The first part will take place in a virtual setting with a streamlined agenda to address urgent and procedural matters. Substantive matters that require in-depth negotiations will be deferred to a resumed in-person meeting to be held in 2022. The session will be held under the theme: “Building Back Better: securing people’s well-being and sustainability in Africa”. The theme calls for governments to align recovery measures with long-term objectives of strengthening resilience to the impacts of climate change and integrating more ambitious policies to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and restore ecosystem services. The theme also encourages countries to prioritize green and sustainable recovery plans that deliver mutual benefits for social, economic, and environmental resilience. The session will consist of the expert group meeting to be held on 13 and 14 September 2021 and a ministerial segment on 16 September 2021. The theme of this year’s conference is “Financing Africa’s post-COVID-19 development”. Considering the multidimensional impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Africa’s development, this theme will bring together various stakeholders, including policymakers, the private sector, and researchers, to examine ways and means to expand Africa’s development finance sources sustainably. Africa’s different financing frameworks should be explored to find innovative solutions, beyond the beaten track, so that Africa does not emerge from the COVID-19 crisis with a real loss of more than a decade of efforts to strengthen its economy and human capital. Across Africa, the pandemic has left more than 30 million people in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.90 a day. This is the second AEC that occurs during the pandemic. Therefore, it is an opportune time to assess progress in Africa’s Covid-19 impact response and control measures since the previous meeting a year ago. Since its start in 2006, the AEC series has facilitated discussion and knowledge exchange on a wide range of themes and challenges confronting Africa.  To register for the event, click here Visit the event website for more information on the 2021 African Economic Conference.   Location AFRICA NDC HUB dileepraj@panapps.co UTC public
