Glasgow Climate Pact

The United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) has come to an end. The 36 African countries that submitted their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by the 12th of October 2021 were featured in the UNFCCC synthesis report.  Parties are to communicate new or updated NDCs as soon as possible in advance of the fourth session of the Conference of the Parties.

Together with other countries, the  151 new national climate commitments submitted prior to and during COP26 fell short of putting the world on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

However, following the two weeks of deliberations, delegates agreed that countries should further reduce by 2030 their carbon and non-carbon greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen their 2030 emission target by next year, scale up provision of climate finance for adaptation to developing countries, submit long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies and take actions to assist vulnerable countries in adapting to climate-related losses and damages.
